This project started out with an idea, but I didn’t really know how I was going to approach it or where it would go. I decided to start simply, with a pencil outline. I used reference photos for the sitting girl and the pile of books.
I continued with pencil as if I were doing a typical sketch, although I started to play with outlines for the girl and the books and papers.
At this point, I knew I wanted to add a little something more. I reached for my colored pencils and a fine-tipped Sharpie. I suppose that the end product could be considered a true illustration, as I started with an idea and attempted to recreate it on paper.
I’m not really sure what else to say about this drawing except that some people will understand it and others won’t…
There is definitely potential for a more finished piece from this idea, which I would probably do on larger paper. I’d consider adding some charcoal in a future version, perhaps to darken the background which I left alone here.
